What do we mean by calling the church the body of Christ? What
is the role of the church -- in the lives of its members, and
in its witness to the world? May different understandings of the
church underlie some of our denominational tensions? How may the
church need to change to continue to bring good news to a changing
society?
These and other questions will spark the 2003 Covenant Conference:
The Church We Are Called to Be and to Become
Thursday, November 6 - Saturday, November 8, 2003
New York Avenue Presbyterian Church
Washington, DC
Keynoting the conference will be two noted theologians from different parts of the Presbyterian Church: Barbara Wheeler, President of Auburn Theological Seminary in New York, in dialogue with Richard Mouw, President of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. Other plenary speakers are Bruce Reyes-Chow, Organizing Pastor of Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco, and Patrick Henry, Executive Director of the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research in Collegeville, MN.
The conference will also offer four varied worship services, thought-provoking workshops, discussion of happenings across the church, and ample opportunities for renewing old friendships and forming new ones.
Earlier Covenant Conferences have included Living Faithfully in the Church When We Disagree, November 1998 in Denver, Jesus Christ and the Church, November 1999 in Atlanta, Biblical Authority and the Church, November 2000 in Pittsburgh, Christ Transforming Culture: Why the Church Matters in the 21st Century, November 2001 in Pasadena, and Confessing Christ Today: Seeking Common Ground, November 2002 in Minneapolis.
Full information and registration forms will be available in early summer.
